my name is Grace, and i have a problem
Current mood: hopeful

I’ve done it for years. And it works, most of the time. But it’s horrible and I want to quit. The first step in quitting is to admit that there’s a problem, right? So I'm going to confess: I’m a procrastinator. And I don’t even say that with complete disdain, as a person who would like to quit perhaps should, because sometimes I marvel at my late-night antics which miraculously create enough thought-provoking ideas to earn good grades. So if it works, why stop? I have some good reasons for this, not the least of which is so compelling that I should interrupt my midterm cramming to write it, but here I go. First off, it’s annoying. Staying up late to work on some assignment that you put off until the last minute can be very physically draining. Sure, I stay up late regardless of whether I have something productive to do or not, but I don’t enjoy staying up late to cram, it’s precisely those times when I need the most sleep. (Confession: I do actually enjoy staying up late, regardless of the reason, if it means that I’m hanging out with someone or just chatting on AIM because we all know that the best conversations happen in the wee hours when you’re too delirious to think straight, it’s when the truth comes out.) So, taking that into account, staying up late to finish up some assignment is only annoying if no one is staying up with you or if there’s no one to talk to on AIM in between periods of productivity. In fact, I actually do believe that I get more accomplished while chatting than I do if I’m all “alone.” Perhaps it’s a sense of bonding with the other procrastinator who is in the same boat as me (because why else would they be up that late?) that is comforting and which positively influences my productivity, or maybe it’s just the distraction from my work that makes me focus on my work? I haven’t really even convinced myself yet of the need to quit this bad habit so let’s move on. Oh wait . . . I have an exam to study for. I guess I’ll have to finish this some other time.
